THEY say things come in threes and that’s definitely been the case for talented Narre Warren South sportswoman Alisha Young.
Young is better known for her netball exploits, but this year added volleyball to her sporting repertoire.
The 15-year-old goal shooter/goal attack made the Victorian under-16 Catholic Netball Association squad in 2008 and did so again this year.
But Young was also selected in the state schools’ netball and volleyball sides to round out her achievements.
She finds out this week whether she made the national schools’ volleyball team.
Young scored 62 goals for the Victorian 15-and-under netball squad during its undefeated charge to the title and suits up for the Victorian under-16 Catholic Netball Association side next month.
“It was really good. The celebrations were pretty wild,” she said with a laugh.
Young will also play for the South East Academy in the annual event against the other academies from around the state in October.
She switched to Yarra Valley Grammar this year and competes for the school’s Victorian Netball League-affiliated side the Yarra Jets.
The Year 10 student plays for the Jets’ Premier League Open team after Netball Victoria officials chose not to offer her previous State League club Palladians a VNL licence.
“I’ve gone up to a higher section and you just have to be strong because defenders can get really pushy,” she said.
“My dad wants me to fight back, but you just stand your ground.”
But Young’s netball success has not stopped her wanting to pursue volleyball outside of school.
She is confident of making the national team in her age group and plans on continuing the sport.
