IT MAY take years, but Dianne Wilson is optimistic that Hallam Community Learning Centre will get more parking spots to ease congestion outside the centre.
Ms Wilson, the manager of the centre, submitted a petition to council about the lack of car parks available at the centre, and the issue is now being considered for the mid-year budget.
“It’s a step forward,” Ms Wilson said.
“I’m glad it is being considered. I know that it won’t happen overnight, but I’m happy it’s not being brushed aside and ignored.”
Last month, Ms Wilson told the News a lack of parking at Hallam Community Learning Centre is posing a threat to patrons’ safety.
About 450 people frequent the centre each week, and because there are only eight parking spots at the centre, cars are lined bumper to bumper outside.
Ms Wilson said the busy street was dangerous to people who attended the centre and she was concerned it would create chaos for fire trucks and ambulances attending an emergency situation.
“We cater for up to about 80 families at our centre, and they have to unload tots from their cars, or get the prams out,” Ms Wilson told the News.
“Disability groups also use the centre and need to unload wheelchairs. It’s squishy and awkward on the busy street, and dangerous. I would hate to see a fire truck try to get through.”
The cost of 15 extra car packs would be $90,000 Ms Wilson said. Despite the hefty expense, she remained hopeful that the Hallam Community Learning Centre would get the extra spots.
“The best scenario would be that we get 15 car spots, but I understand there are budget constraints,” Ms Wilson said.
“I know it won’t happen over night, but if it takes two years for it to happen, so be it.”
