Community closet gathers pace

By Lia Bichel
A POTENTIAL community closet could help hundreds of Casey residents in need of clothing or furniture.
At Tuesday’s council meeting, Four Oaks Ward councillor Karen Baxter discussed the possibility of establishing a community closet, where people could donate clothing, furniture and bric-a-brac that would be available free of charge to people with a Pension or Health Care card.
Cr Baxter said such closets were common in many United States municipalities and were extremely successful. She hoped Casey residents who couldn’t afford to buy inexpensive or second hand clothing would benefit from the program.
“People who have unwanted clothing could donate their items, whether it is their clothing, children’s clothing or furniture,” she said.
“I think it would be great, especially during these tough economic times.”
Council officers are looking into the need for a community closet and the necessary requirements to run the program. They will report their findings to Casey Council in three months before councillors vote on the matter.
