Street booze crackdown

POLICE will step up patrols in an effort to crack down on people drinking in public places in the City of Casey.
Senior Sergeant Gerry Hengel from Narre Warren Police Station told the News police would be working closely with Casey Council to combat the issue.
“We notice an increase in people drinking on the streets as the warmer months approach,” he said.
“We’ll be targeting this in an effort to stop the anti-social behaviour and assaults occurring in the municipality,” he said.
Sen Sgt Hengel said police often found people drinking in parks. “The people we catch are not necessarily teenagers.
“Sometime they are aged between 20 and 30 years,” he said.
Sen Sgt Hengel said under the council’s by-law, anyone found drinking in a public place would receive a $100 fine.
