Tee-off for charity

By Kelly Yates
AROUND 170 golfers teed-off at Berwick Montuna Golf Club last week for the 2009 Mayoral Shield Charity Golf Day.
Organiser Roger McGill, from the Rotary Club of Narre Warren, told the News he was expecting to have raised between $15,000 and $20,000 from Thursday’s event – one of the club’s major fund-raising projects.
All proceeds from the day will be distributed to charities and organisations with a focus on local and international community groups.
Mr McGill said the day ran very smoothly.
“We were blessed with the warm weather. Everyone enjoyed themselves,” he said.
Casey mayor Cr Geoff Ablett also showed his golf skills on the day. The golfers played 18 holes, with hit-offs at 8am and 1pm.
The Mayoral Shield Charity Golf Day has grown over the years, according to Mr McGill.
“I came up with the idea about 24 years ago and it gets bigger and bigger every year,” he said.
Many local businesses jumped on board to support the event, run by the Rotary clubs of Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills.
The next Mayoral Shield Charity Golf Day is set for the end of November in 2010.
