NEW parents will continue to be provided with the free pertussis vaccine until the end of the year in an effort to curb an increase in whooping cough cases.
The State Government is offering the vaccine to parents for free as soon as possible after the birth of their child after an increase in pertussis or whooping cough in recent months.
There were 2818 confirmed cases of pertussis in Victoria up until 23 October this year.
Chief health officer Dr John Carnie encouraged immunisation providers to remind parents of the importance of timely vaccination, which will continue to be made available through maternity hospitals and general practitioners.
