Courts go undercover

OATLANDS Primary School is roofing its basketball courts to enable students to play outdoors – rain, hail or shine.
The roof, designed by Martin Gamble, from Gamcorp Pty, spans the two outside basketball courts and is held up by 12 large concrete legs.
Oatlands teacher Rebecca Finger said she was delighted with the development.
“The roof is unique to our school and will prove such an exciting acquisition to our facilities,” Mrs Finger said.
“The students are so excited to see the development and are really looking forward to its completion.”
The Oatlands Primary School council used the $200,000 from the National Schools Pride grant, which was made available by the Australian Federal Government, towards the project and then raised the remaining amount through fundraising efforts.
Mrs Finger said the new roof would also help the school become more self-sustainable.
“We’ll hook water tanks to it and then collect rain water for use on the gardens and grassed areas,” she said.
