Defecting dancer speaks out

MORE than 500 people gathered to see Li Cunxin, author of the acclaimed book Mao’s Last Dancer, at the third annual City of Casey’s Arts Gathering.
City of Casey community strengthening manager Janette Green was thrilled to see so many people at the event on Wednesday 25 November.
The Arts Gathering provides an opportunity for people in the Casey community who share an interest in any type of arts activity to come together and network.
At the event, Li shared his story about his life journey from when he was born into utter poverty in Mao’s communist China and how, at age 11, he was selected to train in Madame Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy.
He spoke about how he received a cultural scholarship to America and defected to the west, going on to become one of the best dancers in the world.
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith, who was the master of ceremonies at the event, said Li’s story was amazing.
“He is a living example of how to overcome adversity and achieve excellence in life,” Cr Smith said.
Guests were also entertained by Casey Serendipity Concert Party and internationally-renowned opera singer Shu-Cheen Yu.
