Police to go

VICTORIA Police has begun providing ballistic vests to its members to protect them from weapons and firearms.
Eight thousand and five hundred Integrated Operational Equipment Vests will be rolled out across the state and all operational members have been expected to have one within 12 months.
It will be the same range of armour undercover police officers in Los Angeles and New York have been using.
Victoria Police will be the first jurisdiction in Australia to opt for the heightened level of protection.
The vests contain equipment pouches, allowing police to carry handcuffs, police radio, additional ammunition, baton and capsicum spray within the vest.
The $22 million project follows an extensive trial where officers from across the state ensured the vests were practical and safe.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said the health and safety of police officers were key priorities.
“Police often find themselves in volatile situations and do come into contact with people armed with knives and firearms,” he said.
“The Integrated Operational Equipment Vests will provide all police with a high level of ballistic and spike protection, increasing confidence and feelings of safety among our members.
“We have tried to make them as comfortable and easy to wear as possible so that members start putting on the vests as part of their daily routine.”
Mr Walshe said in addition to the added protection, the vests would reduce injury and discomfort.
