What a waste of life!

By Kelly Yates
NINE out of 11 people killed on Casey roads this year were aged between 11 and 21.
And they were a “tragic waste of lives”, says TMU Sergeant Pat McGavigan.
“It’s disappointing that people are dying on our roads,” he says.
Operation Ardent, a high-saturation statewide police operation, was launched in the municipality last July after Casey was continuing to drive up the state’s road toll.
Authorities described the highly publicised operation – it started after two fatal collisions in two weeks at the intersection of Hallam and Ormond roads in Lynbrook – as speeding and hooning drivers’ worst nightmare.
The operation focused on reducing road trauma and fatalities. The targets were speeding and fatigued alcohol and drug-impaired motorists.
Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) ran from 29 November to 12 December and was aimed at detecting and removing all alcohol and drug-impaired drivers from the roads.
Sgt McGavigan said the operation went well, with no fatalities in that time.
“We did more than 4500 breath tests and found 25 people over the legal alcohol limit and one drug-impaired driver,” he said.
A reduction in road trauma has been top focus for the Casey TMU.
Sgt McGavigan says young drivers often have the belief that fatal crashes won’t happen to them.
“But the reality is that it does happen to them,” he said.
Police will be out in force over Christmas, with the simple message: “Be aware and take care on the roads.”
