VICTORIA Police have unveiled a revamped tactical and safety training program which teaches officers how to deal with people affected by drugs, alcohol or mental illness.
The two-day training program is mandatory for all operational Victoria Police members and focuses on improving communication and mental illness awareness.
Premier John Brumby said the improved training program was one of the tools to help improve the way police officers carried out their vital work.
Police and Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron said new laws introduced late last year also gave police extra search and move-on powers to tackle street crime, weapons offences, drunkenness and disorderly conduct.
