A NEW system of traffic management checkpoints will be set up in the City of Casey during fires to help control and manage road travel.
They aim to regulate the flow of road traffic into an area where fire has occurred, is presently occurring, or has the potential to occur.
Victoria Police, the CFA and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) are working to implement the Traffic Management Points initiative.
Senior Sergeant Gerry Hengel from the Narre Warren police said travel through a fire area was dangerous and needed to be controlled.
The checkpoints will restrict vehicle access depending on the level of danger and the different levels of access allowed will be signposted at the checkpoints.
“There are certain levels of safety and hopefully this will allow residents to return to their properties in a safe environment,” he said.
