Finger-lickin’ bad

A COMPANY owning 39 KFC outlets throughout Victoria has been fined $140,000 with over $56,000 costs for failing to meet proper standards of hygiene in several of their restaurants.
Raw chicken, blood on the floor and a build-up of grime and dirt on equipment were some of the breaches found at KFC food outlets in Casey.
The City of Casey has successfully prosecuted the owner, Southern Restaurants (Vic) Pty Ltd, for breaches of the Food Act 1984.
A number of inspections were done at six KFC food outlets in Fountain Gate, Narre Warren, Lynbrook, Cranbourne, Hallam and Endeavour Hills between 2007 and 2009 and identified a significant number of breaches.
Some of the other breaches observed during the inspections included clogged drains in the washing area, spilled oil, mouldy walls and a failure to provide soap at hand wash basins.
At the sentence hearing on Thursday 4 March, the magistrate said that all stores had fallen short in their obligations to meet basic cleanliness standards.
Following the defendants entering a plea of guilty, the magistrate imposed a fine of $140,000 – reduced $50,000 in consideration of the guilty plea – together with costs of $56,708.
