New tricks for old – John Doutch from Berwick runs the Older Men New Ideas discussion groups f

A BERWICK man is running get-togethers for Casey men over the age of 50 with the aim of enhancing their health, wellbeing and lifestyle in retirement.
John Doutch has been involved with the Older Men New Ideas discussion groups for the past five years.
Mr Doutch jumped on board the volunteer initiative, which is by the Council on the Ageing Victoria, when he retired at the age of 55.
There are currently 21 groups running throughout Victoria, with two of them based in the City of Casey.
Mr Doutch is looking at launching another men’s group because of its popularity within the municipality.
He said that Casey men have plenty to say for themselves.
“We talk about anything and everything,” he said.
“We have members who are retired, some who are still working part time and one man who runs his own business.”
As part of the program, the men get the chance to meet up and chat in a relaxed environment, said the 62-year-old.
“The program helped me become more open and trusting,” he said.
“We have an objective to address older men’s holistic health needs, not only their physical but also emotional, psychological and spiritual health.”
Mr Doutch said “mateships” were often formed at the sessions.
“It’s not about finding long lasting friendships. It’s about mates sitting down, listening to each other and only offering advice if asked.”
Mr Doutch said the 35 men taking part in the Casey based program met either on a fortnightly or monthly basis.
“The guys in the group decide when to meet and how the sessions will be run,” he said.
“And they don’t have to come every time. They just come as they like. No pressure.”
An Older Men’s Discussion Group forum will be held at the City of Casey council chambers in Narre Warren on Wednesday 24 March from 9.15am to 12.30pm.
The free event includes morning tea and refreshments. For bookings call Trevor on 9655 2125 or John on 0425 787 545.
