A DELI in Endeavour Hills is one of 11 across the state to be fined for overcharging customers.
The deli was found to be overcharging 31 cents for a tub of Pepato cheese after a recent trade measurement blitz.
Consumer Affairs Minister Tony Robinson said the delis were unlawfully including the weight of packaging in the purchase price charged on popular deli items such as dips, cheeses and antipasto.
“The Brumby Government is standing up for Victorian consumers by making sure they get what they pay for,” he said.
“Victorian Law is clear. When selling food by weight, the weight used in the transaction must be the food alone without any packaging. Retailers should deduct the weight of the packaging so the price is calculated on the net weight,” he said.
Mr Robinson said trade measurement inspectors were overcharged between 22 cents and $2.13 a transaction at the delis caught in the blitz.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s 20 cents or $2, overcharging leaves the consumer out of pocket,” he said.
The delis received $701 infringement notices because they included the weight of containers when weighing deli products.
