CASEY traffic police say there is a “real problem” with drivers ignoring school-zone speed limits, catching 16 drivers speeding as students returned to school last week.
Operation Juno, a police initiative launched last October, is back for 2010, with Senior Constable Allen Inderwisch from the Casey Traffic Management Unit saying people’s driving behaviour near schools was “out of control”.
“We were hoping to start the new term better than that,” he said.
Police have run the operation – patrolling streets around schools randomly in marked and unmarked vehicles – five times since it started and have detected 149 offences.
Sen Const Inderwisch said that was nearly 30 offences per shift.
All up police have nabbed 106 speeders and found two unlicensed drivers and seven unregistered vehicles.
“We also caught four drivers failing to display P Plates, three motorists using mobile phones while driving and five people failing to wear seatbelts,” Sen Const Inderwisch said.
“Police are disappointed to find this many offences around schools. Child safety is one of the main aims behind the operation.”
Operation Juno will continue until the end of the year.
