FREE trees, shrubs and groundcovers will be handed out to residents during the upcoming plant giveaways at Westfield Fountain Gate and Centro Cranbourne. A blend of hardy Australian natives and local indigenous plants have been chosen to offer residents a choice according to their neighbourhood character, soil type, block size and individual preferences.
Now in its ninth year, the council-funded plant giveaway forms part of the community-based ‘Growing a Green Web’ program, which aims to revegetate open spaces in the City of Casey through volunteer involvement. The ‘Growing a Green Web’ initiative also sees an additional 20,000 native plants planted each year on public land in Casey with the help of schools, committees of management, service clubs and community agencies.
City of Casey environment manager Nicola Ward said it was best to plant the new plants as soon as people received them and before the colder weather sets in. Distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis, and residents can receive two plants per household with proof of residence.
The plant giveaways at Westfield Fountain Gate, level two outside Priceline, and Centro Cranbourne near the food court are set to take place today, (Thursday 29 April) from 9am to 5pm, Friday 30 April from 9am to 5pm and Saturday 1 May from 9am to midday.
