Hoons to be hit

SERIAL hoons on Casey roads have a target on their back, police say.
Traffic Camera Office are providing police in the state’s worst areas for road trauma, which include Casey, with intelligence packages to try and drive down the incidence rate of fatalities and serious injuries.
The information includes a list of names and addresses of known traffic offenders in the region.
Superintendent Neil Paterson, head of the Traffic Camera Office, said this was the first time police have used these packages in a bid to decrease road trauma. “The intelligence packages identify the top 30 to 40 drivers who have received the most infringements over the last two years,” Supt Paterson said.
“This is about targeting our most serious and dangerous offenders who have little or no regard for the law.”
Supt Paterson said police would not necessarily target people who have had the most number of offences, but rather those who have committed more serious offences, such as speeding by more than 45 kilometres per hour over the limit.
“Offenders who have disqualified licences-whether it be for failing to wear a seatbelt, speeding or talking on a mobile phone and continue to drive – can expect police attention,” he said.
“Ultimately, it is up to local police how they use the information, but some stations have already had members covertly and overtly sitting off the addresses of known offenders and intercepting them if they attempt to drive.”
Supt Paterson said some police have been contacting names on the list to try and get them involved in road safety driving programs and other educational projects.
“We know people who have had a history of traffic offences are over-represented in road trauma,” he said.
“We are targeting these people for their safety, and for the safety of all road users. We will be relentless and continue targeting these people until they get the message.”
Other areas to receive the intelligence packages include Melbourne, Dandenong, Monash, Yarra Ranges, Booroondara, Hume, Brimbank and Moreland.
Bayside, Glen Eira, Kingston, Geelong and Warrnambool police have been monitoring offenders in their areas since receiving the information last week.
