BERWICK resident Kay Rankin and 50 of her closest friends and family raised nearly $3000 at an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser.
Mrs Rankin has been running the fundraisers at her home for the past six years, saying it had become a regular event.
“We had a great morning tea of homemade scones, cakes, slices and yummy food,” she said.
“We had a real fun and laughter morning with a raffle and display of intimate garments by Intimo.”
Mrs Rankin said she ran the yearly event to support the Cancer Council and its fundraising for cancer research and support services.
“I have had major operations and follow up treatment for bowel cancer, endometrial cancer and also secondary cancer of the lymph system,” she said.
“These days I am in remission.”
Mrs Rankin said her second daughter suffered from bowel and liver cancer at the age of 33, when her youngest child was only nine months old.
“Fortunately, she is in remission after suffering another bout of liver cancer four years ago,” she said.
Last year Mrs Rankin was on the fundraising committee for the Ovarian Cancer Foundation and in the past, has been involved with the committee of the “Lend a Name – Lend a Hand Campaign” which rebuilt and renovated the cancer ward at what is now the old Royal Women’s Hospital. She has also spent some time on an advisory committee at the Cancer Council of Victoria. Mrs Rankin’s Biggest Morning Tea ran from 10am to midday on Friday 28 May.
“I am extremely happy with the amount of money we raised.I outdid my last year’s total of $2690.”
