OATLANDS Primary School is helping its students develop a love of sport.
Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood visited the school on Friday to see the positive outcome of its Active After-School Communities (AASC) program.
The program, funded by the Federal Government through the Australian Sports Commission, provides free sport and activities for students in the after-school time slot.
AASC was designed to encourage inactive children in sport and through a positive and fun experience, develop a love of sport that inspires them to join a local sporting club.
About 20 students, twice a week take part in the program which kicked off at the school more than two years ago.
So far, students have had the chance to take part in activities including softball, basketball, taekwondo, soccer and games.
Oatlands Primary School principal Stuart Daly said they had been happy with the program’s success.
“The program is really aimed at kids who aren’t already involved in a sporting group, but we have a number of students involved who are,” he said.
“We hope we can give them the skills to then go out a play sport on a regular basis.
“Any opportunity to get children involved in sport is a positive.”
