Warning as child burns on the rise

PARENTS have been urged to take care with hot liquids after paramedics treated 10 children who suffered burns in just 10 days.
A five-year-old boy from Narre Warren was among the injured children.
Paramedics said the boy accidentally knocked over a cup of boiling water onto his arm on 1 June. “Relatives put wet face washers on his arm and called an ambulance,” an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.
“When paramedics arrived, they put a burns dressing on his arm and gave him pain relief through an inhaler.”
The boy was taken to Casey Hospital in a stable condition.
Paramedic team manager Rohan Anstey said parents of children who had been burnt told them it happened so quickly.
“They turn around for a split second and a child pulls a hot cup of coffee or boiling water onto themselves with devastating consequences,” he said.
“In winter, people tend to drink more hot drinks. And there’s also a risk from open fires and heaters. It’s important for people to make sure fireguards are in place and that children are kept away from heaters.
Last month, paramedics treated 18 children, aged under 10, for burns injuries.
