Casey needsconsistency

By Gavin Staindl
LAST week stand-in Casey Comets coach Glen Bristow stated after his team’s home loss to South Melbourne that they lacked consistency and patience, and he vowed to work on it over that week’s training.
This week the Women’s Premier League outfit returned from Preston with three points after a convincing 4-1 win that was highlighted by Casey’s patience and 90-minute consistency.
“We worked on it at training,” Bristow said.
“We worked on being patient, maintaining passing, getting in behind the defence and moving the ball quickly in the final third,” Bristow said.
The training regime appeared to have paid dividends on Sunday when the Comets controlled possession for the first half and only a strong Preston defence kept the Comets from scoring straight away.
Pacy Nicola Prins scored after 15 minutes when she fired a shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net and Mel Atherton chipped in on the stroke of half-time with a penalty.
A well-taken corner in the 62nd minute that cleared the front row of defenders allowed Laura Croft to sneak in and header home the third goal.
Preston scored from a set piece late in the game but Prins snuffed out any chance of a comeback when she scored her second goal in the 85th minute.
“The pleasing thing is we retained the ball after we scored a goal. It was a team performance and there were no real lapses,” Bristow said.
Casey is known for losing concentration after a goal is scored and in recent weeks they have lost vital matches after losing focus and conceding a goal.
“We will score goals in every game but we must remain focussed and patient if we want to win them,” Bristow said.
Casey will head to Altona next week and if they play similar to how they played last week they could find themselves in the top five by the end of the week.
