A worldly walk

FOUNTAIN Gate Primary School held a walkathon last week to raise money for their sponsor child through World Vision.
Grade 5 and 6 students completed the four laps of the school ovals to raise about $800.
The walkathon was for the youngsters as part of their integrated unit, ‘You Can Make a Difference’.
As part of the unit, students learn about different countries and the health and educational issues children their age face in countries including Africa, South Korea and Japan.
Students were introduced to a young girl from Senegal, named Amy, through a video.
Grade 6 teacher Sladana Cvijetic said the students noticed the importance of water and how precious it was.
“They realised they can live a lot longer without food, but not water,” she said.
“People in Senegal had to walk up to 10 kilometres to get water.”
The ‘Walk For Water’ reflected the students unit. They were only allowed to have a drink at the halfway mark and at the finish.
All money raised went to the Grade 5 and 6’s sponsor child – 11-year-old Kandi from Senegal.
Students designed posters about ‘making a difference’, which were displayed on the fences around the school.
