NEIGHBOURHOOD Watch has had a makeover.
From this week, the volunteer organisation has been revamped so that each local government area will have a Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) group.
Victorian NHW president Andrew Brideson said the group had retained its philosophy of looking out for neighbours.
“Neighbourhood Watch was established in Victoria in 1983 in response to an increase in burglaries,” he said.
“As crime and communities have changed, there has come the need for Neighbourhood Watch to broaden its scope.
“I believe this new structure will attract a wider participation from across the community, and will allow NHW groups to take action on crime trends happening across their community, rather than in their immediate few blocks.
“There is an opportunity for volunteers to work on a wide range of activities that will help make the community safer.
“Some of these will be with the police but others might be with local government or just the NHW volunteers out there doing what they do best.”
