BREAKING all winter sport traditions, cricket took centre stage for a group of over 60-year-olds in Wodonga last week.
It was the first time the Victorian Over Sixties Cricket Association (VOSCA) has held a Winter Cricket Carnival and president Rob Wilson said it was a raging success.
“A lot of people drove past the three cricket grounds and looked on in amazement that people were playing cricket in mid winter,” he said.
“But, yeah, it was fantastic, we had sunny weather every day and we got coverage from WinNews TV.”
A regional Casey team – made up of players from Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia – was among eight sides put together from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales.
Casey scored three wins against Bayside (S.A.), Essendon and NSW before losing in the final against the VOSCA representative team.
Batting first Casey were all out for 76 and in reply VOSCA made light work of the run chase passing them at 1-80.
Casey’s Ian Marks was the most consistent batsmen throughout the carnival and won the aggregate award, compiling 118 runs from four innings and captain Col Jones was the pick of the bowlers claiming seven scalps – the second highest overall for the tournament.
