Call for horse helpers

RIDING for the Disabled now has a new place to call home in Narre Warren North.
Coach Andy Rouget is thrilled with the new home at the Balmoral Equestrian Centre, but says the organisation desperately needs volunteers to help out with the Riding for the Disabled program, which provides horse riding programs for children and adults with different disabilities for recreation, sport and therapy.
The group of riders at the Balmoral Equestrian Centre, aged from three to 55, ride on Tuesdays and Friday from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
“We also have 18 riders ready to start the program but no helpers,” she said.
“The volunteers will be leading the horses, and saddling and grooming them.”
Ms Rouget praised the program by the non-profit organisation, saying it not only provided a form of exercise for the riders but also taught them how to take instructions.
“They get to exercise outside in the fresh air. They learn how to take instructions from strangers and how to socialise and participate in a group activity.”
Ms Rouget said the potential volunteers didn’t have to commit to working every week.
“Even if people can only do once a fortnight that would be great,” she said.
“It’s a great way of giving back to the community.”
Ms Rouget has been working with Riding for the Disabled for 20 years.
“It’s really satisfying seeing the smiles on the riders’ faces,” she said.
Anyone interested in volunteering their time for the Riding for the Disabled program is asked to call Andy Rouget on 0408 582 716.
