Comets fail to fire

CASEY Comets Women’s Premier League coach Debbie Nichols stated her team would need a miracle to make finals after they were hammered 5-0 to Sandringham at Comets Stadium.
Nichols watched as her team was run over by a superior opposition and suggested the fifth-placed Comets need to either buck the losing trend or rely on other teams losing to make finals.
This was Casey’s first match in two weeks and after a relatively sedative fortnight of training sessions because of injuries and school commitments, the once explosive Comets became witches hats for Sandringham.
After conceding a goal in the first three minutes then another goal with 10 minutes left before half time, the heads of the Comets’ players again began to drop.
“We had one of those starts that we used to have two years ago where the opposition score early and our whole game plan goes out of whack,” Nichols said.
“We had a chance to get through to half time down 1-0 which would not have been a bad position to be in but they scored a soft goal with 10 minutes to go that made things hard.
“I’m running out of excuses.
“Mathematically we’re still a chance to make finals but we are going to need a miracle if we don’t reverse the losing trend,” Nichols said.
Casey sits six points behind fourth-placed Ashburton and assuming the rivals beat the struggling Preston Lions next week, Casey’s rubber against South Melbourne now turns into a must-win game.
