Labor water pledge

BERWICK’S sporting clubs would benefit from a $900,000 water boost under a Federal Labor Government, La Trobe candidate Laura Smyth announced on Sunday.
“Sports clubs and other local people who use Edwin Flack Reserve, Grices Road Reserve and Sweeney Reserve will benefit enormously from a commitment of over $900,000 from the Federal Labor Government for storm water harvesting at the grounds,” Ms Smyth said.
Ms Smyth and Casey councillor Simon Curtis welcomed the Federal Government initiative on Sunday in front of an enthusia!stic crowd at the Berwick Football Club.
“This will mean up to five megalitres of water per year for the oval and athletics track at the Edwin Flack Reserve, around eight megalitres for Grices Road Reserve and almost 14 megalitres for Sweeney Road Reserve,” Ms Smyth said. “It will make sure that local users get more use from our valuable local sporting facilities during times of water scarcity.”
Cr Curtis, the chair of the Casey Conservation and Environment Committee, said stormwater harvesting was important to sustain local grounds.
“As a local resident and long-term supporter of local sports clubs, I know how much my family and other families in our area will benefit from better water security at our sports grounds and recreation facilities,” Cr Curtis said.
