Outlet for anger

A NEW program designed to help high school students express their anger is starting up at Kambrya College.
The Berwick school is in the process of setting up a fitnesscentre to enable the students to deal with their emotions through physical activities such as boxing, cardio exercises and lifting weights.
Another aspect of the new fitness centre is to increase and promote fitness at school.
Kambrya College chaplain Rev John Mac said the initiative was like “sports therapy.”
“We want to educate kids on how they can express their anger and release their built-up energy through physical activity,” he said.
“We want to give them that space to do it at school so they don’t resort to coming to terms with it in the school grounds by fighting.”
Rev Mac said he noticed the pressure school students were under these days.
“This fitness centre will give them an area to let off some steam,” he said.
“I will also take the time to sit down with them one-on-one and work on how they can deal with their feelings. I think this concept really does work.”
Rev Mac said both girls and boys were showing interest in the school’s fitness centre.
“I’ve been having just as many girls as boys taking part in the boxing circuit. They are all getting into to it. They are very responsive and engaged,” he said.
PE co-ordinator at Kambrya College Brett Wilson said the students were “pumped” about the fitness centre.
“And the teachers are even more excited than the kids,” he said.
