POLICE say street racing may have led to a collision in Cranbourne North over the weekend which left a man and a woman with serious injuries.
The Hallam woman, 48, lost control of her Holden Commodore as she was driving south-bound on the South Gippsland Highway about 2.40pm on Saturday.
Police said the car veered across two south bound lanes, crossed the median strip and hit a tree before rolling and colliding with a north-bound car.
Senior Constable Travis Cusack from Casey Highway Patrol is calling for witnesses to provide information about the driver behaviour in the lead up to the collision.
Police believe two vehicles, one being the Holden Commodore, were travelling one behind the other on the South Gippsland Highway, just north of Waverley Park Drive.
He said it was thought the cars were travelling at 150km/h along the 80km/h stretch of road before the crash.
The other car, a champagne coloured ’90s model Holden with distinctive Southern Cross stars stuck on the rear windscreen, didn’t stop.
Police are still looking for that car and its occupants and are appealing for information.
The woman and her 39-year-old male passenger, also from Hallam, were trapped in the car and had to be freed by CFA volunteers.
The woman was trapped for about 25 minutes, while the man was trapped in the wreckage for more than an hour.
Both were taken to The Alfred hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. No one in the north-bound vehicle was hurt.
Sen Const Cusack said the motorists were lucky to be alive.
“People do not seem to realise that they aren’t invincible and always think that it will never happen to them.”
Police are urging motorists to slow down and show greater care when on Casey roads.
Anyone with information about the collision is urged to call Senior Constable Travis Cusack at Casey Highway Patrol on 5991 0600 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
