Bowls club gets things rolling

By Kelly Yates
THE summer bowls season at the Narre Warren Bowls Club was opened last Saturday.
A large crowd gathered as the first jack was bowled by club president Judy Naughton and the first bowl by Bowls Victoria representative John Panter.
Club secretary John Uren said the setting down of this first bowl also christened the club’s new Tifdwarf bowling green, a drought-tolerant grass which provides a top class bowling surface.
Mr Uren said a highlight of the opening was when members Stan Birkett, Keith Blencowe, Arthur Fitt, Ken Harrison, Cliff Heath, John Schwennesen and Jack Scanlan received veteran badges.
Ms Naughton said the club’s synthetic green, which is planned for construction in December this year, would complete the upgrading work at the club.
She said that with a synthetic green, and the new Tifdwarf grass green, new flood lighting and enlarged premises, the club could offer high class bowling facilities.
The club is predicting high membership growth, with a doubling in membership over the next five years as their goal.
A ‘Try Bowls Day’ and sausage sizzle will be held at the club, on Magid Drive, on Sunday 24 October.
