Not such a gas

A GAS leak caused traffic chaos in Narre Warren on Monday morning.
Firefighters from Narre Warren and Hallam responded to the call along Shrives Road, with reports about LP gas leaking from a car.
Incident controller, Fourth Lieutenant Tony Bundock, said crews found a Holden Commodore with a small leak coming from the gas tank when they arrived on scene.
Despite the leak posing no “immediate threat”, the crews secured the scene.
“They ran out a covering hose line and then called for the specialised Gas Brigade from Officer to determine the best way to deal with the residual fuel,” he said.
“This then resulted in the decision being taken to flare off the remaining gas.”
Lieutenant Bundock said it was the safest way to dispose of the gas.
“Our issue came in that in order for us to flare the gas off safely, we have to have a mains water supply feeding the pumping appliance,” he said.
“This meant having to close both Webb Street and Shrives Road, adjacent to the railway crossing, so that we could access water from the hydrant point.”
The road was closed for nearly an hour, with motorists and buses forced to find alternate routes.
