A PETITION signed by 156 residents opposing the Casey Council’s 11.6 per cent rate rise was tabled in Parliament this month.
Inga Peulich MLC tabled the petition started by former councillor Paul Richardson on October 6 and called the Premier to investigate the legality of forcing the City of Casey to pay the $100 million compensation costs of the Brookland Greens Methane Gas Leak.
“As a member of the Legislative Council, Mr Richardson asked me to table the petition,” she said.
“There were 172 signatures on the petition, but as some names and addresses were incomplete the final figure is 156.”
Mr Richardson said the reason for starting the petition was because he strongly believed that the State Government was responsible for the Brookland Greens Disaster.
“In a nutshell, that is what it’s all about,” he said.
“I walked around to local businesses and all around Casey to collect the signatures – I was hoping to get 1000, but was happy with the 172.”
Ms Peulich said the Stevensons Road methane gas and landfill issue was one of the most important facing the City of Casey in the lead-up to the election.
“We’ve seen the Labor Government contribute just $20.5 million,” she said.
“The strong view being expressed by the community is that they want to end the neglect.”
