FIRE-FIGHTERS have made a desperate plea for safety improvements on a busy Narre Warren North road following a series of fatal and life-threatening crashes, including two last week.
Members of the Narre Warren North CFA and local residents have written letters to the Casey Council, local MP and VicRoads asking for improved lighting, more signage and a decreased speed limit on Horsewood Road near Belgrave-Hallam Road.
On 1 November at 5.30pm, a 21-year-old Hampton Park woman died after her car hit a tree on Horsewood Road in Narre Warren North.
A day earlier, on 31 October at 10.30am, a woman in her thirties was seriously injured and air-lifted to The Alfred hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Brigade captain Shaun Trotter said there had been two fatalities in two years and many serious crashes involving multiple vehicles near the intersection.
“It’s one of the worst roads in Narre Warren North area. The road has been a problem for a few years, but it’s getting worse due to the heavy traffic,” he said.
“It’s a straight road, a high-speed corner and there’s no lighting. We are asking for the road surface to be fixed too. If nothing changes, there could be more fatalities in the future.”
Narre Warren North fire-fighter Michael Burgess agreed and said he worried that the volume of traffic on the stretch of road would increase this summer.
