CRANBOURNE galloper Larry’s Never Late could be headed overseas after notching his second black-type victory in the Group 3 Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation Stakes (1500m) at Sandown on Saturday.
The Kiwi-bred five-year-old continued his impressive first-up record in upstaging Peter Snowden’s highly-rated Demerit by the barest of margins.
His barnstorming finish left trainer Jim Conlon with plenty of options for an offshore tilt with the reigning Launceston Cup winner this summer.
“I thought at the (last) furlong that he’d have to dig deep, but he’s a good horse and he did,” Conlan said, before noting the benefits of the 22-week spell.
“We just couldn’t get him ready for any part in the Spring, so he’s only had a trial this preparation and it’s been good for him.
“In nine weeks there’s a race in Dubai that we might have a look at, and there’s some good races for him on turf (in Hong Kong), so we’ll see what happens.
“We might even back off him now and head to Sydney.”
Larry’s Never Late, previously trained by Rod Douglas, has now has seven wins and over $500,000 in prizemoney from 28 starts.
