CASEY Council has reminded residents to avoid parking in disabled car parking spaces in the hectic lead-up to Christmas.
City of Casey manager Community Safety Caroline Bell reminded residents to stick to the regular car parking spaces to avoid council-issued fines.
“While it may be more difficult to find a car park close to the shops during high shopping peaks, residents should not be tempted to park in disability car parks without displaying a valid permit,” she said.
“We appreciate that, at times, car parks can be difficult to find, but it is important that residents remain conscientious and leave disability parks for those who require them and have valid permits.
‘Any cars found parked in adisability car park without a valid permit will be issued with a $119infringement notice.”
According to the 2006 Census, 14 percent of people in the City of Casey have a disability and rely on disabled parking bays.
Since 2004, 2258 infringement notices have been issued to people parking in a disability car park space without a valid permit.
Victoria currently operates a statewide Disabled Persons Parking Scheme, providing two categories with varying parking concessions based on the applicant’s needs for assistance.
Category one – Wheel Chair Tag entitles the holder to park a vehicle in a bay reserved for disabled motorists only, and Category two entitles the holder to park a vehicle in a normal bay for twice the specified time.
