NOT every new mum receives a standing ovation when she enters the maternity ward.
But it took a lot of courage to do what Mileah Andrews did – deliver her baby all by herself.
The Berwick woman gave birth all alone on her bathroom floor, acting fast during a speedy 20-minute labour.
Mileah’s contractions began at 3am on 13 January and she told her husband, Graham, to stay home from work and be ready for the new arrival.
However, she insisted he take their one-year-old daughter Sienna to her grandmother’s house in Dandenong North first.
“He was hesitant, but I told him it was all under control,” Mileah said.
“I thought I had a few hours to go.”
With her husband gone and her contractions becoming closer together, Mileah rang her midwife for advice.
“She said I sounded too calm and relaxed and told me to hang in there. Ten minutes later, I had no choice but to push.”
Mileah delivered baby Neveah on her ensuite bathroom floor.
Five minutes later Mileah’s husband Andrew returned to find his wife and new daughter Nevaeh Khloe. After a few seconds of shock he called the ambulance. The paramedics let Andrew cut the cord and then took the family to hospital.
“When I arrived at the hospital, everyone in maternity knew that we were coming, and they were all cheering,” Mileah laughed.
Mileah said she wouldn’t change her solo delivery for the world and was thrilled with the help she received from Triple-zero operators, paramedics and Casey Hospital staff. “We were just so lucky that there were no complications,” Mileah said.
“It was my second baby so I knew to look for the umbilical cord and to keep her warm. Hearing her instant cry let me know that she was breathing.”
Now, Mileah is able to laugh about her dramatic delivery, but admits she will never be able to look at the ensuite the same way again.
