Bipartisan challenge

THE bar is set and students all across Victoria are ready to meet the challenge.
Primary and secondary students in Victoria are encouraged to take part in the 2011 Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge to share their love of reading with family, friends and classmates.
To take part in the challenge, students in Years 3 to 10 must read 15 books or more and students in Prep to Year 2 must read or ‘experience’ 30 books by 16 September.
South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Inga Peulich said reading was essential to develop strong literacy skills, which will help children in later life.
“Reading is an important life skill and most importantly, books inspire and allow children to dream big,” Ms Peulich said.
There are more than 7000 titles on this year’s booklist – the biggest ever – so there is something there for everyone.
Speaking at the launch, Premier Ted Baillieu said this year’s challenge would see Victoria’s past premiers unite in a historic display of bipartisan support.
“The aim of the Premier’s Reading Challenge crosses the political divide and they join me as passionate advocates for literacy, and will work alongside me to promote the challenge during the year,” he said.
