Time for a tree change

By Emma Schenk
TREEPROJECT is a community organisation dedicated to re-vegetating the Victorian landscape with indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses.
The not-for-profit organisation helps tackle salinity and erosion, restore wildlife and provide wind breaks for farms.
Project officer Amanda Sheehan says it’s an important thing for our world, as every day 50 to 100 species of plants and animals become extinct as their habitat diminishes and human influences destroy them.
Local resident Mark Levas isn’t letting the world go to waste though, and is one of many volunteers who plant seedlings in their backyards.
Once they’ve matured, Mr Levas gives the plants to farmers in order to help rejuvenate the environment.
“This project definitely benefits our world,” Mr Levas said.
“Australian forests have been desecrated over the last few years and we’ve lost over 80 per cent of our trees.
“At least we’re on the way to rebuilding them to their original state and hopefully we can help even more in the future.”
Mr Levas said the best thing about planting seedlings for TreeProject is you don’t need a big backyard or any specific knowledge to become a volunteer.
With all the materials and training provided, all volunteers need is a bit of sunlight, time to provide daily care, and the right attitude.
TreeProject also co-ordinates urban plantings on the last Sunday of every month beginning in May, along the Yarra River with Parks Victoria.
“People can come down, plant some trees, meet people, relax, and have a barbecue lunch,” Ms Sheehan said.
