THE Hillcrest Christian College Junior Choir hit a high note at a music festival recently.
The choir placed second in the choral section of the South Eastern Arts Festival at St Margaret’s School, Berwick.
The choir, which is under the direction of conductor Kirsty Graham and assistant Joanna Wiggs, was one of seven from schools across Melbourne’s south east competing in the section.
Mrs Graham said the standard of the competition was very high, with only one point separating first and second place.
She said the Hillcrest Junior Choir performed two songs.
“The first song was a traditional folk song from Torres Strait Island called Monkey And A Turtle and was performed unaccompanied, first in unison and then with a simple ostinato accompaniment,” she said.
“The second item was a lovely ballad titled Why We Sing which was performed with a lovely tone and good contrasts in dynamics and ably accompanied by Mrs Gillian Crawford.”
Mrs Graham said participating in the event was a wonderful opportunity for the children.
“The Hillcrest Junior Choir are to be commended for their excellent behaviour and received many compliments about their neat and tidy presentation,” she said.
“The Hillcrest community is very proud of the excellence achieved by the Junior School choir.”
