Comets’ slump has coach unfazed

By Gavin Staindl
AN end-of-season slump is threatening to knock the Casey Comets from finals contention.
The Victorian Premier League team has not won a match in three weeks, with Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Bundoora at Harvest Home Reserve dropping the Comets to fourth on the ladder.
But the Comets coach is not fussed.
In fact, Ian Williamson expects his chargers to finish first.
“We have been playing much better than we were a few weeks ago, we just aren’t getting the results,” Williamson said.
“The effort and the endeavour is much better and I am much happier with the attitude of the girls. But it all depends on which way you look at it.We are the only side left that plays both the EAP and VCL (development teams) and if we can’t win those two games, then we don’t deserve to play finals.
“But come the end of week we could be back on top.
“We’ve got a game tonight against the EAP which, if we win, will put us back into second and then we play the top side on Sunday, which, if we win that, will put us equal first.”
Through a drop in concentration and communication on Saturday, Casey went a goal down, but a well-executed set play from a corner gave the Comets the equaliser with 20 minutes remaining.
Bundoora struck again through a ‘sloppy’ goal, but Williamson commended the fighting spirit of his girls to peg the score back to 2-2.
A ‘magical’ through-ball by Jessica Curl split the defence and set up substitute Danielle Lawrence for the one-time shot into the corner of the net.
“We are scoring goals every time we play,” Williamson said.
“I can’t say we are firing on all cylinders, but we are doing enough to score goals every game.
“We’ve been competitive in every game so far this year, and if a team wants to beat us then they have got to come to us and take us on.
“It is now a sprint to the finish line, and we can see that line, and that’s something we can be proud of.”
