Trail of fitness

By Chad Vanestrop
FOR Brian Shenholds, 67, a recent trek along the Kokoda Track has been an experience rather than an adventure.
Taking the pilgrimage in late May, Brian’s eyes have been opened to the struggles of those who endured the track during World War II.
Brian has credited the YMCA Fountain Gate with increasing his fitness to a level suitable for the nine-day trek.
“Having children, a mortgage and working…meant my health and fitness had taken a back seat for years, but the YMCA staff at the centre gave me plenty of support and encouragement,” he said.
Having joined the YMCA in 2000, Brian’s trek is a culmination of a 10-year period where his fitness steadily increased.
“I did two YMCA Challenge Fitness Camps (prior to the trek) at the centre and found my fitness levels improve out of sight,” he said.
Many have trekked Kokoda over the years, but for Brian the journey holds special significance as son Dean, a self-confessed coach potato, came along for the journey.
Inspired by his father’s persistence, Dean also increased his fitness to a level suitable for the trek.
Despite the magnitude of the trek, Brian was keen to keep it a secret.
Nicky Brown, YMCA programs director at Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre, said Brian was the centre’s quiet achiever and did not advertise his intention to do the trek, but word leaked out.
“When Brian told us he was doing the Kokoda Track, we had no doubt he would finish it as he is very committed to his health and wellness. Brian is inspirational and we are all so proud of his achievement,” she said.
Buoyed by the motivation of the staff at YMCA, Brian now has the bug for health and wellbeing. Now approaching 68, he is looking to do the Great Wall of China marathon or the trek to Mount Everest base camp.
