SHE’S 79 years old and is in the best shape of her life- so it’s fitting that the Berwick resident celebrated her birthday at the gym last week.
Staff at Fernwood gym in Narre Warren threw their oldest member, Jean Brown, a surprise birthday party on Friday
Ms Brown said she was pleased to be able to celebrate the special occasion with her “second family.”
“The staff at Fernwood has played a major part (in my fitness regimen),” Ms Brown said. “I don’t know if I would have kept coming if they weren’t so welcoming.”
Ms Brown first stepped foot into a gym after the death of her husband 14 years ago.
She had planned to go swimming while her son worked out, but upon seeing the kiddie pool, had decided to take a walk on the treadmill instead.
Shortly after, she signed up at Fernwood gym, and now takes a bus to the centre three times a week to lift weights and do cardio.
Until recently, Ms Brown was also an active participant in the pump class.
“I get to the gym three times a week come hell or high water,” she said.
“If you told me (14 years ago) that I would be going to the gym I would have laughed. When my son first said to go to the gym I protested. But now I look forward to it. I enjoy coming to the gym. I feel healthier and happier.”
Ms Brown recently beat three bouts of cancer and credited her healthy lifestyle to dealing with the news of the disease and in her recovery.
She also said her healthy habits gave her more energy to keep up with her five children and grandchildren, who range from ages two to 20.
Fernwood gym manager Joy Drake said Ms Brown was an inspiration to the other members.
“We have more than 900 members and Jean is the oldest,” Ms Drake said.
“Jean comes in week after week no matter what is going on her life and the younger members see that and think she’s amazing.”
Ms Brown said that while she had to stop participating in pump class after a recent operation, she was not going to slow down any time soon.
“I will be going to the gym for as long as I am able,” Ms Brown said.
