YOUNG men from across the municipality received expert tips from a range of mentors at the City of Casey’s ninth annual men’s Mentor Breakfast last week.
Australian rules footballer and four-time premiership coach-turned media commentator David Parkin was the guest-speaker at the breakfast held at the Civic Centre in Narre Warren on 26 August, and attended by 37 students from 12 secondary schools.
Students were paired with a mentor, whose career closely matched their inspirations.
City of Casey Edrington Ward Councillor Simon Curtis encouraged the students to listen to what their mentors had to say.
“The event is an opportunity for students to get the benefit of the experiences, successes and mistakes of men, who have achieved a great deal in their chosen professions.
“It’s not always an easy thing for young people to get a grip on where they’re going or what they want to do, so listen to your mentor’s stories and ask as many questions as you can, not just about the successes, but about the mistakes and the failures as well- in fact it’s usually those stories which are not only the most interesting and fun, they’re often the most instructive,” Cr Curtis said.
