Drop zone looms for Berwick City

THE future of the Berwick City Soccer Club will be on the line when it takes on Waverley Wanderers in Saturday’s season-defining clash.
Berwick was downed 6-0 by Division Three champions Kingston City on Monday night and must bounce back against the Wanderers if it wants to avoid successive relegations.
At the start of the week, Berwick was four points clear of Croydon City Arrows in the drop zone, but after Saturday’s result, where Croydon escaped with an upset win over the Peninsula Strikers, the buffer has been reduced to one point.
A Berwick win on Saturday will ensure it remains in the league, but anything less could spell danger if the in-form Croydon pulls off another upset against Nunawading.
IN the same league, Doveton was downed 2-1 in a dead-rubber at Waratah Reserve on Saturday.
After beating Fitzroy days earlier in a catch-up game, Doveton stuck with Mornington in the first half but were overrun in the second.
In Division Two, the Casey Comets drew 0-0 with Malvern City at Kooyong Reserve.
In Provisional Two, Endeavour United’s small hopes of securing promotion were dashed as it was beaten by Monbulk twice in the one week.
Needing to win one of its two matches to stay in touch with the frontrunners, Endeavour came unstuck in the last half of both matches, giving up five second-half goals, while the Casey Kings’ season remains alive after they snatched three points from two games. An upset win over Caul-field United last Saturday has lifted Casey from the drop zone – and given it a one-point buffer over the bottom two teams heading into Saturday’s final match.
