POLICE have issued a warning to drivers to be vigilant on roads after a CFA truck collided with a vehicle en route to an accident on Monday night.
About 7.45pm, the Berwick CFA truck was travelling south on Clyde Road at Berwick with its lights and sirens operating.
The truck went though a red light at Bemersyde Drive and hit a white utility vehicle, Traffic Management Unit (TMU) Leading Senior Constable Linda Smallbones said.
The driver of the vehicle, a 39-year-old Berwick woman, was taken to The Alfred hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Leading Sen Const Smallbones said the incident was being investigated by the City of Greater Dandenong TMU, but she urged people to be more aware of their surroundings when driving.
“The main problem (police) have when we are driving with lights and sirens is that some drivers do not know what to do and they just slow down but don’t move out of the way,” she said.
“Nine times out of 10, drivers would not expect to be approached by emergency vehicles at intersections. Sometimes, drivers are lacking in concentration or have the music up and can’t hear the sirens.
“We ask drivers to be more aware on the road, and if you hear a siren, keep your eye out and move to left and allow emergency to proceed.”
