About 40 students from Berwick TEC’s Personal Development Class will be walking 40 kilometres today (Thursday) from Lilydale to Warburton to raise money for the Caroline Chisholm Foundation.
The Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation is an independent charitable trust, initiated and supported by Chisholm Institute of TAFE to provide educational grants.
Student Dane Impey, 16, said the money would be used to help students struggling to pay TAFE fees.
He said the class had been preparing for about four weeks to make the trek.
“Most of us play sports and are pretty fit, so we thought it would be good to do a walk,” he said.
“Everyone has been training, but we expect the walk to be pretty tough.”
Five teachers will accompany the students on their walk and a support bus will be travel alongside them, providing them with water and food along the way.
Dane said he estimated the trek would take about nine hours to complete, but said the students would stop for short breaks at rest points along the track.
“We will be walking rain or shine,” he said.
“There are a few people who are nervous about it, but everyone is keen.”
Anyone wanting to donate to the cause can contact the teacher of the Personal Development Class, Keith McGinn, on 9212 4613.
