Singing up a storm

By Bridget Cook
CASEY Grammar School took out the top spot when students from a number of local schools took to the stage for the City of Casey’s school musical spectacular.
Teenagers from seven secondary schools around Casey performed in the inaugural Schools on Stage on Thursday night, hosted by former Home and Away actor Tim Campbell.
The event showcased students to more than audience members as they performed two songs from their school musicals.
Casey Grammar School won the competition with their performance from The Wizard of Oz.
St John’s Regional College were the runners-up performing from The Wiz, the Best Song Award went to Cranbourne Secondary College for ‘Adelaide’s Lament’ from Guys and Dolls, and Endeavour Hills Secondary College won the Teamwork Award.
City of Casey Mayor Shar Balmes said Schools on Stage was a new and exciting event for the city.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase the remarkable talents of Casey’s young people with more than 160 young people performing as part of the event,” she said.
“School musicals are a fantastic way for young students to develop their creative talents, form new friendships and strengthen their involvement in their school community.”
Cr Balmes congratulated all those who took part.
“Congratulations to all of the students and their teachers who put in hours of rehearsals to create such wonderful performances,” she said.
“Our judges certainly had a difficult task deciding on a winner, but the performance of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ and ‘Jitterbug’ were hard to beat and Casey Grammar School was announced as the ultimate winner of Schools on Stage.”
The council works in partnership with young people, families and the community to support and encourage young people and bring out their best.
