IT took Cranbourne trainer Greg Eurell and his former neighbour Craig Williams to upstage the international high flyers on Saturday to win the $3 million W.S. Cox Plate.
The two teamed up with the new queen of the Australian turf, Pinker Pinker, to win the weight for age championship by a length and a half from New Zealand’s Jimmy Choux.
A plan was hatched by the ‘Cranbourne Connection’ on race eve and Williams delivered the ride of his life to continue his unbelievable run of form in recent times.
Over the last two weeks Williams has triumphed in the Caulfield Cup on Southern Speed, the Geelong Cup on Dunaden and then topped it all off with his win on the four-year-old daughter of Reset in the Cox Plate.
Williams will partner the well fancied Dunaden on the first Tuesday in November as he attempts to claim the Australian Grand Slam of racing in next Tuesday’s $6 million Melbourne Cup.
Williams has already won the Golden Slipper, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate and will join racing royalty if he can add the three handle ‘loving cup’ to his collection.
