Upgrades for accident hotspot

ONE of the worst intersections in the City of Casey will receive major upgrades to improve safety.
VicRoads announced on Tuesday the start of worksfor a $1.68 million project to improve safety at theintersection of Clyde Road and the Princes Freeway in Berwick.
VicRoads regional director Duncan Elliott said in the five- year period ending December 2010, there were 35 casualty crashes at the intersection.
In the past 12 months, there have been about 30 crashes at the intersection.
The road was named on the Casey Council’s 2011-12 priority listing for arterial road intersection upgrade which was released in September.
Each year, VicRoads invites projects for consideration under its annual roads program, providing the council with the opportunity to advocate for state funding to improve arterial road connections through the municipality.
City of Casey MayorShar Balmes said the priority listing would be used to advocate to and seek support from other levels of government. She said upgrades were needed to keep up with the area’s rapid growth.
Mr Elliott said the improvements to the Clyde Road and Princes Freeway intersection would include providing additional right turn lanes for traffic turning into both inbound and outbound ramps to the Princes Freeway, modifications to the left slip lanes to help reduce queues and delays and an upgrade to pedestrian facilities.
Work is expected to begin this month and be completed by May 2012.
The project is funded by the Transport Accident Commission and delivered by VicRoads and is an addition to the $55.6m upgrade of Clyde Road between High Street and Kangan Drive that has been jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments.
